MITSUBISHI L300 4x4 SWB Gedanken zum Campingausbau



Der L300 ist sein 2007 unser Reisefahrzeug, und er hat einige Metamorphosen durchgemacht. Angefangen haben wir mit einem Test der originalen Klappmöbel, aber das war höchstens für eine Notübernachtung brauchbar. Schnell war klar dass es eine massgeschneiderte Lösung sein muss. Die Ausgangslage: wir sind zu dritt, also kann die hinterste Sitzreihe raus, und ein Schrank/Bettsystem rein. Da wir relativ schnell aufs Dachzelt gekommen sind waren die Anforderungen wie folgt: Wir wollten zu dritt innen sitzen können, und zu zweit schlafen. Ein dritter Schlafplatz (querschlafen oder überbauen des Beifahrersitzes) war durch das Dachzelt nicht notwendig.	Beispiele/Examples Thedjjack: Unser Bus/Our van	Our L300 is in the family since 2007 as a travel van, and underwent some changes. We started using the original foldable chairs as a bed, which was ok only for emergency use. It became clear we had made something up to suit our needs as a 3 person family. So we got rid of the rear bench and put a bed/storage system in, as most people do. We did opt for a roof tent for the night, so our points were: We want be able to sit inside in bad weather/cold (3 persons), and sleep there (1-2 persons). So there was no need really to make up a third bed inside, which made things much easier, as we have a short wheelbase low roof bus.

Wenn man die Lehne der originalen Mitsubishi Sitzbank gegen die Fahrtrichtung stellt, ergibt sich eine kleine Sitzgruppe. Das Gepäck kann bleiben wo es ist, für den Klogang müssen alle raus und das WC kann zwischen die Sitze gezogen werden.		If you swap poritions of the original bench backrest you can have a small dinette there, the stuff can stay under the seats (plus in a side cupboard not shown here). For using the toilet you need to be alone in the van and slide the Porta Potti into the dinette area.

Wenn man das Heckmöbel umklappt, ergibt das eine komfortable Liegefläche (aus Sperrholz) wo man mit Therm-a-Restmatte und Schlafsack fein schlafen kann.		Unfolding the storage system results in a comfy bed area of 120x190 cm where you can put your air matress and sleeping bag.

Nachteil: Das Gepäck ist dann zum Teil nur noch von außen zugänglich. Man kann nur entweder sitzen ODER schlafen. Bei Schlechtwetter und einem abendlichen Schlafumbau sehr mühsam.		But: most of the stuff is only accessible from outside then because the bed is above it. And you can either use the dinette or sleep there, not both. Which is not handy if the weather is bad and you want to convert the van for the night.

Phase 2: mehr Platz. Das Heck des Busses wird durch die leicht geöffnete Heckklappe verlängert. Der Spalt wird durch Zeltstoff abgedeckt. Dadurch kann das Bett bleiben, und man kann die Sitzbank trotzdem verwenden.		Phase 2: more room The rear hatch of the van can be extended by 40 cm or so by leaving the hatch open and fixing it there, the gap being clodes by tent fabric made to fit. Then you can have a FRONT dinette AND a rear bed at the same time.

Die Sitzgruppe wandert nach vorne. Der Motorbuckel wird zum Einzelsitz, die Rücklehne des Fahrersitzes nach vorne gekippt. Das Bett kann gebaut bleiben, und wenn man den Wagen verlässt klappt man das Fußende ein und schließt die Heckklappe.		The dinette can be made up using the engine hump as a seat and the front seat backrest tilted forward. The rest of the van plus extension is long enough to have a full bed, with the extra bonus of better ventilation when sleeping. If you want wo leave the van you fold up extension and matress and lock the rear hatch.

Vorteil: Liegen und sitzen gleichzeitig möglich, dadurch Aufenthalt bei Schlechtwetter angenehmer. Nachteil: Porta Potti nicht mehr so leicht zugänglich, und für die Verwendung müssen immer noch die anderen aus dem Wagen.		Pro: People can sit and lay down in the van at the same time so it is much more convenient to stay there in bad weather. Downsides: still there is no toilette that can be used anytime.

Phase 3 (Konzept): MEHR RAUM. Im Heck des Busses wird eine Heckkabine aus Sperrholz eingebaut, die Gepäckstauraum bietet und einen kleinen Waschraum.		Phase 3 (concept still): MORE ROOM There shall be a Rear Cabin made of playwood which has some storage space, a slip-thru sliding door and a small bathroom.

Bei geöffneter Heckklappe kann man eine Türe der Heckkabine öffnen und gelangt von außen in den Waschraum. Auch von innen ist das jederzeit möglich. Der Waschraum ist fürs WC, um sich umzuziehen, zu waschen etc.		Rear hatch opened, you can open a standard door to access the bathroom from outside. Hier im Grundriss: die Heckkabine kann im L300 ca. 120x120 cm groß und 115 cm hoch sein. Das reicht für einen Gepäckraum + Gang mit 50x120 cm und einen Waschraum mit 70x120 cm. Vorne kann jederzeit eine Sitzgruppe für 3 hergestellt werden. Vorteile: Das WC kann auch mal verwendet werden wenn noch jemand im Wagen ist - der Waschraum ist mit einer Schiebetür gegen den Innenraum abtrennbar und nach hinten (Heckklappe) entlüftet. Um im Auto zu wohnen öffnet man die Heckklappe und zieht die Heckkabine aus bis sie verriegelt.. Die Gasfedern der Heckklappe werden ausgehängt und an der Kabine befestigt so dass die Klappe weiter aufgehen kann.		To convert the van to overnight mode, you open the rear hatch and pull out the Rear Cabin by hand until locked. The gas lifters are disengaged and locked into the cabin, so the hatch can open much more now, being suspended by the gas lifters.

Bei ganz ausgefahrener und arretierter Heckkabine ist Stehhöhe im Waschraum. Der Spalt zwischen Heckklappe und Heckkabine wird mit einem Stoffbalg geschlossen. Der Innenraum ist jetzt frei (grün).		There you have it: now you can stand up in the bathroom. Convenient for changing clothes or having a shower. The gap will be closed with tent fabric. The room behind the bench is now free (green area).

Bei ausgefahrener Kabine kann man im jetzt freien Innenraum hinter der Sitzbank zwei Bänke von den Seitenwänden herunterklappen und so 1 oder 2 Betten bauen. Der Fußraum ist Teil des Gepäckraumes, das Gepäck wandert dann unter die Bank. Bettwäsche war hinter den hochgeklappten Bänken gelagert.		Rear Cabin slid out you can fold down 1 or two part beds from the sides. We still need some room in the Rear Cabin to put our feet there, but that can be done as there is storage space under the beds now. Bedding (matress and sleeping bags) can be stored behind the beds when folded up.

Hier im Schnitt sind Personen mit ca. 180 cm Größe eingezeichnet. Im Querschnitt sind die Klappbetten zu sehen die unabhängig voneinander verwendet werden können. Die Heckkabine wird von Schwerlast-Vollauszügen gehalten und stützt sich nicht am Boden ab.		This is a section through the bathroom with a 1,80 (6 ft.) person standing up. The other section shows the foldable beds which can be used independantly. The Rear Cabin is held by heavy-duty extenders and does not need ground rests, so it can be used on soft or uneven ground as well.

Vorteile: 1) Separater Waschraum mit Stehhöhe, auch zum Gepäcktransport etc verwendbar 2) Die Heckkabine hat hinten eine normale Campingtür und ist so von außen zugänglich, auch wenn im Innenraum noch jemand schläft oder sitzt. Zudem ist das Wageninnere nicht mehr nur über die lauten und nicht regengeschützten Fahrzeug-Schiebetüren erreichbar. Zudem kann die Heckkoje als Schmutzschleuse dienen wenn es draußen regnet. 3) Am Campingplatz oder in ähnlich geschützten Bereichen kann man den Wagen so halbwegs versperren und verlassen - werkzeuglos kommt da keiner rein. Die Heckklappe kann zur Heckkabine heruntergezogen und gegen diese verriegelt werden (original Kofferraumschloss). 4) Zu zweit kann man auch mal ohne Dachzelt fein unterwegs sein. Auch für manche Fähren oder Garagen wichtig. 5) Extrem schnelles Setup: Halbwegs eben parken, Heckklappe öffnen, Heckkabine ausfahren bis sie einrastet, Balg befestigen. Dann ist man außen fertig und der Rest kann sich im Innenraum abspielen. Inklusive kochen, waschen, WC-Gang ... Für mehr Komfort muss einer aus dem Auto und die Gasfedern umhängen, um die Heckklappe weiter zu öffnen. 6) Man kann mit ausgefahrener Heckkabine umparken, oder im Notfall wegfahren. 7) Es gibt weiterhin die Option über der zweiten Sitzreihe (original Schiebedach) einen Durchstieg ins Dachzelt oder ein Hubdach zu realisieren - und das ist auch verwendbar wenn unten jemand schläft. 8) Die Heckkabine kann relativ leicht nach lösen der Schwerlastschienen ausgebaut und separat gelagert werden, um den Bus für Transporte etc frei zu haben. Oder für den TÜV. 9) Die Heckkabine kann relativ leicht gegen eine verbesserte Version getauscht werden oder in einen anderen L300 übernommen werden.	Beispiele für kleine funktionierende Waschräume mit 60x100 cm Grundfläche: sportsmobile baths Examples for small 60x100 cm footprint bathrooms: sportsmobile baths	Pros: 1) Separate bathroom to stand up in, also can be used for hauling stuff like camp seats/table or a foldable bicycle. 2) Rear cabin has its own normal rear door, so can be locked when cabin is slid out, and can be accessed from outside in a silent and unobtrusive way while the person in the van still sleeps. Also the cabin door can be easily protected against rain so you can open it without getting everything wet inside - try that with the standard sliding doors. And you have an anteroom when it is rainy weather. 3) At a campsite or other fairly safe places you can leave the van with the Rear Cabin extended, just pull down the rear hatch until the standard door lock engages against the cabin, and also lock the cabin door. Job done. Nobody can get in there without tools and some noise (which a professional thief can do easier through the front door). 4) On a 2 person setup you can leave the bulky roof tent at home and live in the van. This also may be important for some ferries or garages. 5) Fast setup: You can stop whereever you want and have a self contained unit. You just open the rear hatch, extend the Rear Cabin until it locks, and fix the tent fabric connector to the rear hatch. Ready for the night, this could even be done from the inside. For more comfort you have to get out of the van and rearrange the gas lifters to open the rear hatch completely. 6) Rear Cabin extended you can still move your van or even take off in an emergency. 7) There is still the option of a pop top or a door up to the roof tent. The original sunroof is above the 2nd row of seats, and this is accessible even when somebody sleeps in the back of the car. 8) The Rear Cabin can be taken out of the van easily after unmounting it from the Heavy-Duty extensions. It can be stored separately to free up space for transport, or go to the yearly technical check. 9) The Rear Cabin can be swapped for an improved version, or can be migrated to the next L300 if needed.

Es ist mir klar das das alles ein wenig eng zugeht, aber es sollte verwendbar sein. Eine voll funktionsfähige Dusche mit Zu-und Abwasser einzubauen wäre Overkill, und so ein PortaPotti ist auch schnell voll. Aber das Konzept würde über einige unkomfortable Situationen gut hinweghelfen, die wir schon hatten. So ein Sommercamper mit Außenküche funktioniert sehr gut bei Schönwetter und Trockenheit, für einen Skandinavienurlaub oder einen Trip außerhalb des Sommers wären mir ein paar Reserven recht.		I am aware that it is still a mini camper, and will not be spacious - but from my exerience this should work out. A fully equipped shower with hot water supply will not be the goal, and a Porta Potty fills up quickly if used all the time. But the concept will help in some uncomfortable situations we already had to live through. A normal summer camper setup with open air kitchen works out extremely well if the weather is nice and it is dry, but for a trip to the North or outside summer season I want to have some extra fallback scenario.

Wir haben den Wagen im Urlaub getestet. Es waren zwar einige Ecken und Enden nicht fertig, so fehlt beispielsweise noch eine einfache zusätzliche Abstützung des HECKWUNDER und auch der Balg zwischen HECKWUNDER und Heckklappe im offnenen Zustand, aber das Ding funktioniert wirklich gut :-) Hier direkt nach dem rausziehen des HECKWUNDERs, der aufgeräumte Innenraum mit hochgeklappter Pritsche:		We tested the van live in our holidays. Some bits and pieces are still missing, as an additional easy-to-handle support for the HECKWUNDER box or the fabric shell between box and open rear hatch ("shower curtain") - but the rest worked very very well. Nach dem Ausfahren und verriegeln kann innen eine oder zwei Pritschen abgeklappt werden. Sie sind gut 110 cm lang - was der Länge des HECKWUNDER entspricht - und bilden mit der Sitzbank nach Umsetzen der Rückenlehne eine Liegefläche über die gesamte Wagenbreite und gut 2 m Länge.		After sliding out HECKWUNDER by hand and locking it in position we can put down one or two cot bits. Length is a bit more than 110 cm (which equals the HECKWUNDER length) and after moving the rear support of the seat to the front we have a bed space of 2 meters length and full car width.



Ohne Umsetzen der Hecklehne kann ein Teil vom HECKWUNDER zur Liegefläche werden. Die Kiste, die dort normalerweise ist, wandert unter das Bett.		Without converting the seat a part of HECKWUNDER can be used as bed space. The box that usually lives there is now under the bed.

Der Tisch kann nach umsetzen der Rückenlehne in Fahrposition verwendet werden - diese Spezial-Rückenlehne ist original L300. Vorne am Boden mit weißem Handtuch drüber: Kompressorkühlbox WAECO CF18. Gekocht wird meist draußen, und gegessen auch. Deswegen ist das alles in Schiebetürnähe von außen gut erreichbar. Der Innenraum ist vor allem Schlaf- und Wohnzimmer für unseren Sohn und wir schlafen im Dachzelt.		Play room, couch version Right hand side: little kitchen cupboard for cutlery and plates and mugs. Under the white towel is our electrical compressor fridge WAECO CF 18. We usually eat andcook outside, so everything is easily accessible through the sliding door. The interior is now mostly our son's room, while we sleep in the roof tent.



Von außen: Hier ist die Heckklappe auf dem HECKWUNDER aufgelegt und versperrt. Wenn man die hintere Tür und Gepäckklappe verriegelt, kann der Wagen in halbwegs sicherer Umgebung zurückgelassen werden (Campingplatz). Sämtliches Gepäck kann von innen ODER außen erreicht werden, und man kann hinten in den Wagen einsteigen - ohne lästiges Schiebetürgeräusch in der Nacht.		From the outside: here the rear hatch is locked to the HECKWUNDER. If we additionally lock the rear door and luggage compartment the car can be left alone in reasonably safe environments like a camp site. All luggage can be accessed from the inside as well as from the outside and we can enter the car through the rear door silently - no sliding door noises during the night.





Ein Blick unter die Heckklappe, die mit längeren Gasfedern modifiziert wurde: der hintere Teil vom HECKWUNDER ist oben offen so dass man unter der maximal geöffneten Heckklappe (je nach Körpergröße) stehen kann, um sich umzuziehen oder zu waschen. Es fehlt noch der Sicht- und Wetterschutz. Der soll auch das derzeit noch provisorisch zu montierende Moskitonetz ersetzen.		A view under the rear hatch which was modified with longer gas struts: the rear HECKWUNDER compartement is open at the top so one can stand up under the rear hatch when it is opened to the maximum to dress or wash. Still an open issue is the "curtain" to connect HECKWUNDER and hatch as a mosquito screen and weather protection.

Zur Konstruktion ein paar Worte: Ich habe im Internet Teleskop-Vollauszüge gekauft, gut für 190 kg Traglast bei Auszug 1120 mm. Das Paar wiegt knapp 12 kg und kostet 250 Euro. Davon sind auf jeder Seite 2 montiert, das ergibt eine Belastbarkeit von 380 kg plus Sicherheit. Voll belastet gibt das HECKWUNDER gerade ein paar mm nach - genug dass die Heckklappe nicht mehr sauber verriegelt. Deswegen wird es noch eine zusätzliche Abstrebung geben. Die "Bodenfreiheit" zwischen HECKWUNDER und Wagen-Inneboden beträgt nur 3-4 Millimeter. Das aufwändigste war die absolut parallele Unterkonstruktion für die Schienen im Wagen, die aus geschweißten Stahlkonsolen und 20 mm Birkensperrholz besteht. Sie wird in bestehenden Gewinden verschraubt (dritte Sitzreihe) und zusätzlich durch zwei zusätzliche Löcher im Wagenboden mit Gegenhalteplatten, vor den vorderen Radkästen. Der entstehende Hohlraum vor und hinter den Radkästen ist durch einen Griffschlitz zugänglich und beherbergt Werkzeug und selten verwendete Ausrüstung. Das letzte Bild zeigt das eingefahrene HECKWUNDER (mit Aluwinkeln eingefasst). Die Kiste hat nur wenige mm "Luft", was vielleicht erklärt warum die Baustelle gut zwei Monate gedauert hat.		Some words on design: I bought full slide-outs from an internet shop, specified for 190 kg load per pair at a full 1120 mm slide. If HECKWUNDER is fully loaded and me sitting on the edge there is a sag of a few mm - enough for the rear hatch to not lock easily to the HECKWUNDER, which is why I will make an additional strutting. There is only 3 or 4 mm room between the HECKWUNDER and the inner floor. The most challenging part was the construction and fitting of the inner slide-out base, made from welded steel consoles and 20 mm birch plywood. They are bolted to existing threads from the third seat row and additionally to counter plates under the car body in two places. The compartments before and after the wheel arches are accessible throuh a hand wide slot and is used for tools and spares and some gear that is used only occasionally. Last picture: HECKWUNDER fully slid in (framed with aluminium angle profile). The box only has some mm space left, which explains the very long fitting period of two months.
