Fahrtag 8

Riding Day eight

Samstag.

Saturday
Again a cool and dry night. As usual I get up to prepare hot water for coffee, the Martin rises, and finally Phil.

We are still looking for our way over to the next valley, and following our maps there has to be some old road. We ask locals in a little village, and they show us where. Martin takes off first, and as Phil and I want to follow the locals shout at us to stop, Martin is going the wrong way, as there is a Y-fork where he took the wrong turnoff. But gone he is. So we decide not to go after him, but rather have coffee in the opposite cafe. He will come back.

Albanian concrete is not a quality wonder, possibly they used all the good stuff for bunkers. And the wiring is again very creative.

"Schau, eine Tankstelle!"
"Wo?"

"Look, a petrol station over there!"
"Where?"

Wenigstens gibt es bleifreien Diesel ...

At least the Diesel is unleaded.

Ein schöner alter W123, einer von 2,7 Millionen gebauten.

Nice old W123 series Benz, one of 2.7 million built.

The old road is demanding, and has a lot of turnoffs, so in the end we ride a goats path rather than a road.

In a small three house village we get some drinks and road advice - seemingly we are still on track as the road is better here. Which changes again a bit along the way.

But finally we (blue line) hit the track to Vermosh valley (red line) - hurrah! And still we have some petrol left!

First we ride down to the bottom of the valley, quite a way.

We stop on the way to ask for petrol, and find this little local brewery. An economist from Tirana is on visit here, and chats with us. Tamara is the name of the village, not of the girl on the sign.

Siesta time - we are the only guests in that village inn.

Because of the excellent water here, aside from the brewery there are two trout farms in the valley as well.

Phil wants to get rid of his facial hair, but only gets an electric shave at the local barber shop. Razor shortage possibly.

Our task for the afternoon - to Vermosh and back and further.

Aber ohne Benzin geht nichts. Tamara hat eine Tankstelle. Mit Diesel. Und Flaschenbenzin.

No way without that petrol. Tamara has a petrol station with only a Diesel pump. But they sell bottled petrol, again.

The valley widens, and remembers us faintly on North African valleys we rode once.

The valley gets narrow again, the piste as well.

Grabmal mit Wasserspender.

A shrine with a well.

We hit Vermosh valley, and with it the tarmac, as the Montenegro border is only a few km away.

After a short rest we ride back the same way, having to get to Durres by tomorrow noon and back home in Austria by Monday morning.

But today is today, and we enjoy the nice gravel roads there.

This looks quite daring, but we never had problems with lost goods on the road, although only gravity helps keeping things in place. Highway patrols nightmare ...

Our last rough camp, we ride one of the many roads that branch off the main road and keep our eyes open. Then the gravel road is blocked by a fence and we decide to camp right there, as it is already dawning.

On the way we stopped at a trout farm and bought three nice trouts, which now are prepared on the fireplace.

We have roast potatos to go with that, and really cold beer as we did the shopping only half an hour ago.
